Volleyball was invented in 1895 in Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA, by Pastor William J. Morgan, the director of physical education at the YMCA. He aimed to create a simple game that required minimal equipment.
In 1896, Dr. Alfred Halstead, a college director in Springfield, named the game 'volleyball'. The word means 'flying ball'. The years 1895–1920 mark the first development phase. From 1920, the court size was officially set at 9x18 meters.

Volleyball began to spread in the Middle Volga region (Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod) around 1920–1921. From 1922, it was included in the Vseobuch program (national military training). In Moscow, volleyball became popular among artists and theater figures. In 1923, the 'Dynamo' society was established and began promoting volleyball alongside other sports. Around the same time, volleyball emerged in the Far East — in Khabarovsk and Vladivostok. From 1925, it also began to develop in Ukraine. International volleyball organizations set goals to popularize the sport, strengthen educational programs, enhance technique and tactics, and improve the overall physical fitness of players.
